Fall is definitely in the air here in the Georgian Bay, Ontario area and with it comes lots of inquiries for family photos. It's a popular time of year for them, so we thought we'd share just a few tips (5 to be exact) for better family photos:
1. WORKING WITH DIRECT SUNLIGHT - Late day light is great for photos, and it can be even better with a richly colourful sunset. However, not all families can book their photo session for that time of day, and we'd have to turn down a lot of people if we only insisted on doing them, then. So, shade then becomes our friend. Here is a perfect example of strategically using shade to take a family portrait (this photo was taken in Kleinburg, Ontario).
2. GOLDEN HOUR - The last hour or so of the day is referred to as "golden hour" by photographers because the sun is low in the sky, shadows aren't as harsh and colours seem warmer. It can be ideal, and here's an example of the warm colours produced by this amazing light (this photo was taken at Wasaga Beach, Ontario).
3. WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR? - This is one of the most common questions we get asked when we have clients book us for family photos. Our answer is basically: be yourself, and coordinate in a way that you're comfortable with, and tones can be somewhat similar. Here's a perfect example of a family who are wearing different styles of clothing, but complimenting colours (photo taken near Hanover, Ontario).
4. CAN WE INCLUDE OUR PETS? - From time to time we have proud pet owners who realy want to include a beloved pet, and we understand, they're a member of the family too! Because we're rural we do a fair number of portrait sessions on farms or country properties as well. All it takes is a little patience, and strategic placement. The results can be great (photos taken near Orillia, Ontario & Flesherton, Ontario).
5. HAVE FUN! - This is the most important point, thus why we've saved it for last. When you get kids, pets, etc. all involved in trying to take some beautiful photos sometimes things go smoothly,
and sometimes they don't.
So it's best to just go with the flow. Enjoy the fall colours and all that this time of the year offers! (photos taken near Alliston, Ontario.) To check out more of our current work and keep updated on our newest work, check out our Facebook page and LIKE us!
